A while ago I was looking for some software that would enable me to get rid of a background from an image so that the background became transparent. Often when you download images the background is white which looks fine on its own but if you want to add it as part of a kindle book cover for example, then you end up with a white background and therefore you can’t add the image on top of any layers you might already have for your cover.
Let me show you what I mean. Below is an image of a dog on a white background. On it’s own it looks fine because it has been placed on a white background anyway (the background of the blog post):
Now suppose I want to put it onto a coloured background. The next image shows a blue background with this image added on top. You can now see the white background showing through!
There is a free tool that you can use online to remove the background (thank you to Dave who emailed me about it!). When I first had a play around with the tool it didn’t work very well – that was back in August. I decided to have another go with it and I don’t know if it has changed or not but this time it seems to be working well!
I have created a video for you to see how it works and how I was able to create a transparent background and therefore produce this image instead of the one above!
The free online software is called Background Burner
